LeadersIn Leadership Q&A
How can I reduce my own stress when dealing with a overly jealous colleague?
Asked by Swati Pawar on 03/08/2012
I get affected by peoples opinions about myself and get disturbed easily when someone accuses me of things I havent done. I get stressed when people express wrongly percieved notions about some of my actions and talk about the same with colleagues. I don't say that I am always right but surely I expect people to verify facts before pointing fingers and analyse the situation before commenting on somethings. Over a period of time I have now become immune to petty office politics and try to pretend that I am not at all affected. However I think that people are jealous and thats why they behave the way they do. I need help in to make me realize my worth and help me analyse stuatuions before being presumptive. I would like to know if staying unaffected would help me grow because I thing its also necessary to kep a tab on the surrounding ongoings

Swati, we wanted to jump in here and to let you know that it sounds like Daniel Goleman and his wisdom might be perfect for you. Daniel Goleman is the author of Emotional Intelligence and we've done many interviews with him.
The first thing we'd like to say is that it seems that you're going through quite a bit of stress in the workplace right now - so the first thing to do is to manage your emotions and make sure the stress isn't impacting you too much, here's Daniel's interview on stress reduction: http://leadersin.com/programmes/daniel-goleman-on-the-art-of-reducing-stress
The second thing is that you get what you focus on. So try focusing above the situation and on your goals / other areas of your business / life. Here's Daniel's full interview http://leadersin.com/programmes/daniel-goleman-full-interview-nov-20
Another you might like as it sounds like your ambitious is Brian Tracy's interview here - (perhaps get your colleague to watch it too and then he or she will be so obsessed by their own goals that they won't mind you achieving your own!) http://leadersin.com/programmes/brian-tracy-the-author-of-eat-that-frog-the-full-interview-2011
Good luck, best wishes from us here at LeadersIn.
