shadowing a good leader is best but the problem is finding who is willing to take one on

I think in order to be a good leader, you need experience, and therefore need to put yourself in situations that give you the chance to lead. Start small and build confidence.

Away from business strategy and financial smarts, I'd say the most important thing in leadership is the ability to step into someone else's shoes - and see the world from their viewpoint. Plenty of interpersonal problems in business (let's face it, nearly all business problems are between people) can be solved if the participants comprehend that what's important to them might not be the most important factors for the other side. So the old saying's right, "Never criticise a man until you've walked a mile in his shoes." The upside of course is that by then you'll be a mile away and you'll have their shoes :-)

The result of good leadership is having 'willing followers'.. i.e. people that would want to be led by you.

The qualities and habits that need to achieve this are many... but there's a few key ones, like; integrity, being open and honest, setting a direction that's meaningful,  setting the vision, decision making and empathy.

Your question though is about 'how' you achieve these qualities... and so to answer that, I'd like to bring up a sports metaphor... So just like a footballer wanting to get better at scoring goals - it's all about practice.  if you wanted to get better at penalty kicks you wouldn't read too much about it, you'd get a coach and you'd go out and practice, time and time again.  It's the same in leadership - go out there, do it and refine the skills based on empirical evidence.
